Intro

"In near-future Earth, an unknown event brings Magic into the world, severely disrupting the lives of its inhabitants and also taking many, as exposure to Magic has adverse effects on the human body. Those who manage to adapt to it however, find themselves developing superhuman abilities over time...all while Magic continues to spread around the globe.Humanity perseveres despite the challenges, but when the sense of normalcy finally startes to be regained, something else finds its way to Earth…"

"FAE Chess" is a universe that takes place on a version of Earth several decades into the future, where Magic is no longer fiction, and the arrival of otherworldly creatures forces mankind to master this new ability...or perish.The story follows several "Variants", who were recruited by the intergovernamental organization "BOARDS" to train and eventually join their special forces in the fight against the FAE.

Prologue

The 1st Day to Week 3

People become sick and many die in a small city in Europe.
Deaths are attributed to an unknown disease in the area, causing it and the sick people to be quarantined.

Week 3 to Month 6

The disease's mortality rate is very high, but some survive.The survivors and the area are studied for several months, but little information is gained. Meanwhile similar events crop up in other parts of the world.As time passes, cases become less frequent, the mortality rate drops to less than 30% and survivors of the first events start developing superhuman abilities.They start as simple tricks like creating small flames or healing small wounds, but grow considerably more powerful as time passes.

Month 6 to Month 18

Studying those abilities, scientists are able to develop new technology that can properly observe these phenomenon.With it they analyze the sites where the "disease" appeared, finding small "holes in space" from where an unknown type of energy had been leaking possibly since the first event was reported.

Month 18 to Year 2

After further study, specialists conclude that the energy has body-altering properties and that the deceased had been exposed to too much of it too fast, perishing due to extreme exertion while trying to adapt.The survivors had been those located in areas further from the sources, thus having lower degrees of exposure.For a while, there is a period of no new developments as new sources of the energy are not detected for years, but with no known way of closing the holes, it continues to spread and the number of "altered" humans continues to increase.

With no scientific precedent to help explain both the energy and the abilities gained from it, they are respectively classified as Aether and Magic, based on how they manifested. Individuals capable of using Magic were named Variants.As time passes, Magic continues to become more common among individuals, which both creates a technologic boom, and a social crisis, as cultures and religions fail to accept its existence and that of those who are able to use it.

Year 2 to Year 5

Research continues to be done on Aether and the Tears it is coming from. Specialists can confirm that there is another universe beyond them, but current technology is not enough to study it, or cross into that side.And when the world is almost becoming used to Magic, a new development occurs.A Gate opens in the outskirts of a city and creatures pour out of it, quickly making their way to it and causing severe damage to it.Local authorities fail to fend them off as standard weaponry is of little effect, but luckily some of the present officials are Variants and can contain them using Magic.

Year 5 to Year 6

After the The First Invasion, similar events would not occur for several months, but that is enough to push governments into starting the militarization of Variants.As those creatures posed a threat to humanity as a whole and their attacks did not target any specific region, an international organization was formed to combat the threat: The BOARDS (Bureau of Otherworldly Affairs, Research, Development and Security).

Year 6 to Year 6.5

A new Gate opens, but this time humans are ready.The creatures are disposed of quickly, but new phenomenon starts to occur with Variants.Not only have their numbers multiplied immensely since the opening of the first Gate, but unknown markings have begun to appear in the bodies of a select few, accompanied of a spike in power.Those markings would later become known as Arcanima.

Magic is possible thanks to the Ley Lines in one's soul, which humans developed after being exposed to Aether.Arcanima are special patterns some Variants develop in their Ley Lines that allow for the use of advanced types of magic.There are 6 types: Rook, Knight, Bishop, Archer, Sage and Jester.Because of the fast increase of Variants among the general public and the discovery of Arcanima, the nomenclature is changed.-Variant becomes an umbrella term for those bearing an Arcanima.-Peon becomes the name of an individual with ability for Magic but no Arcanima.-Queen was used for the rare instances where one would have multiple Arcanima.

Year 6.5 to Year 16

Gates start becoming more and more frequent, and the number of capable fighters (Variant or not) cannot keep up with them. Many parts of the world are destroyed and even more lives are lost.A second technological boom occurs due to the necessity to fight back, giving rise to ARC Tech (Arcane Technology) weaponry.Discoveries on the human Ley Lines are made that reveal the presence of not-fully develop Arcanima in both Peons and Variants, which results in the creation of Project Blue Blood.[Project Blue Blood] developed technology that allowed the subject to forcefully activate an Arcanima and give it a significant boost in power. But it wasn't a perfect solution, as the process and continuous use of it would cause severe drawbacks to the user, usually death.Humans slowly manage to stabilize the situation thanks to new ARC Tech discoveries and advancements in the mastery of Magic.At the end of the war, [Project Blue Blood] is closed and the technology is criminalized on the merit of being unethical.

Year 16 to Year 25

BOARDS popularity skyrockets thanks to its role in helping in the war, gaining the funding of many organizations and allowing 4 new branches to be built round the world for better area coverage and speed of response.New ARC Tech is developed, allowing the suppression of Gates and the closing of already existing ones...although no permanent solution is found for the opening of new ones.By now fighting is done almost exclusively by Variants.

Year 25 to Year 40 [Present]

The presence of Magic and Gates have become almost normal at this point. Key locations like Hospitals and Schools are equipped with Gate Suppression Tech, while BOARDS is responsible for FAE (Foreign Anomalous Entity) combat around the world.BOARDS also becomes responsible for the recruiting and training of Variants for the purpose of FAE combat.

A, B and C:

Aether: Name given to the otherworldly substance responsible for Magic. It is currently unknown if it is completely new to this dimension, or if there was simply too little of it on Earth to be noticeable.ARC Tech: “Arcane Technology”, all technology made to interact with Aether and Variants. Formerly used exclusively for Magic Research and FAE combat, now it is integrated in a variety of devices, as magic compatibility has reached an estimate of 92% among humans as of this year's report.Arcanima: A specific pattern in an individual’s Ley Lines that allows the use of advanced Magic. Currently around 47% of people possess this trait.Archer: Variant Type specialized in Long-Range combat. Its Arcanima is located in the eyes.Attacker: Position in a SET. Used to describe Variant Types specialized in Offensive Magic.Bishop: Variant Type specialized in supportive magic. Its Arcanima is located in the Right Arm.Black [Type]: Variants attuned to Negative Aether.BOARDS: “Bureau of Otherworldly Affairs, Research, Development and Security”, the intergovernmental organization responsible for everything regarding Magic, Variants and the FAE. It began as a small organization, but with the increase of Variants and frequency of FAE invasions, it had to expand into multiple branches around the world.Color: In the Variant context, refers to which type of Aether the Variant is attuned to. A Variant’s Color is determined at birth based on the polarity of his soul, therefore it cannot be changed.

Defender: Position in a SET. Used to describe Variant Types specialized in Defensive Magic.FAE: “Foreign Anomalous Entity”, umbrella term used to describe any creature not native to this dimension. Individual subspecies receive their own names.

Jester: Variant Type specialized in unorthodox uses of Magic. Its Arcanima is located in the groin and thighs.Knight: Variant Type specialized in Short-Range Combat. Its Arcanima is located in the shoulders and biceps.Ley Lines: System of aetherical paths that start at the soul, run through the entire body, then return to it. Mana is constantly circulating through them. Recent research has shown that Earth also has a similar system, speculated to start at the center of the planet.

M, N and O:

Magic: Process of interacting with Aether and producing an effect through its manipulation.Mana: A type of energy produced by a human’s soul that circulates through his Ley Lines. It is consumed while using Magic and can be restored with time, rest and eating/drinking.

P, Q and R:

PIECES: “Primary Invasive Entity Combat and Elimination Squad”, name of the group of soldiers under BOARDS dedicated to fighting against the FAE. Cadets that complete their training at one of BOARDS’ institutions are automatically promoted into it.Queen: A Variant possessing 2 or more Arcanima.Rook: Variant Type, specializes in defense. Its Arcanima is located in the higher back/chest.Role: Official combat positions assigned to Types based off their unique uses of Magic. They are used in the creation of SETs to assure the teams are balanced and can perform in variated scenarios. The Roles are “Attacker”, “Defender” and “Support”.
